Fly By Jing The Good-On-Everything Trio

At this point, it seems like chili crisp, popularized by the Lao Gan Ma brand, has reached sriracha-levels of popularity. It makes sense, then, that there are tons of new brands popping up that take the foundational condiment and turn it into something truly special. Fly By Jing’s chili crisps are so delicious, we’ve been known to eat them with a spoon, and this trio features two varieties of crisp and one mouthwatering sauce. The Sichuan Chili Crisp is their take on the classic, with tingly, savory spice. The Chengdu Crunch doubles down on crunch to add texture to any dish. Then, there’s the Zhong Sauce, inspired by Chengdu’s Zhong Dumplings. It’s sweet, tangy, spicy, and savory, and one of the best things we tasted this year.

Masienda Tortilla Starter Kit

Masienda celebrates the art of making tortillas from farm to table. They source beautiful heirloom corn to make their masa harina, and we can vouch for the quality and flavor of their product over grocery store brands. And you can make a lot more with masa than tortillas, tamales, and sopes — it’s delicious in cookies, too. Bobby Flay named Masienda’s Doña Rosa x Masienda Tortilla Press one of his top gift ideas of the year in 2022, and we think this Masienda Tortilla Starter Kit, which includes the sleek, modern press and two bags of Heirloom Corn Masa Harina, is the cream of the crop.

Hedley & Bennet Herb Garden Apron

If you know someone who’s always in the kitchen, chances are they could use an apron. Even if they have a few already, they always need to be washed, and the durability and beauty of a Hedley & Bennet apron makes them an ideal holiday gift for cooks. We’re kind of obsessed with this flower-print apron, which is a collaboration with Rifle Paper Co. But don’t let the pretty design fool you — this apron can stand up to anything you throw at it while cooking (and they come in dozens more colors and patterns, too).

This Tramontina skillet is an affordable way to add stainless steel to the kitchen.

18 Traditional Hanukkah Dishes That Should Be in Everyone's Repertoire https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/slideshow/9120/hanukkah-recipes/ https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/slideshow/9120/hanukkah-recipes/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2023 19:21:00 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/slideshow/9120/hanukkah-recipes/ If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, starts on December 7 this year. Like any good Jewish holiday — barring Yom Kippur — it’s all about the food on Hanukkah. It’s the perfect time to throw a festive dinner party for friends or family — who can say no to brisket and latkes?

If you’re not familiar with Hanukkah, here’s what you need to know: The holiday commemorates the defeat of the ancient Greeks by the rebel Jewish Maccabees in around 200 BCE. After their victory, they wanted to re-dedicate the Jewish temple that had been damaged by the Greeks and relight the Menorah but only had enough oil for one day. That oil miraculously lasted for eight days, hence the length of the holiday and the tradition to eat fried foods (yes!).

With deep-frying a major tenet of the holiday, Hanukkah is a fan favorite and the perfect opportunity to invite your friends over and cook (or fry) a fabulous dinner. I’m talking latkes, of course, brisket, sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts), homemade applesauce, matzah ball soup and more. Any of these dishes would be the perfect addition to your Hanukkah party this year.

A version of this story was originally published December 2017.

A Complete Ranking of the Best Store-Bought Soups https://www.sheknows.com/feature/best-store-bought-soups-1843827/ https://www.sheknows.com/feature/best-store-bought-soups-1843827/#respond Thu, 23 Nov 2023 13:52:45 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=1843827 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

From the condensed chicken-and-stars soup we slurped down as a kid to the styrofoam cups of instant ramen we still occasionally eat when we’re pressed for time (and low on cash) at lunch, store-bought soup has been a mainstay of our diets, and it’s always good to have some stashed in the pantry. Soup is a criminally underrated lunch and dinner option. It’s super low-maintenance, which is great news for parents who are strapped for time.

The soup aisle can be intimidating, though. There are so many options, from brands to flavors, and if you want to go outside of your chicken noodle comfort zone, it can be difficult to pick out a soup for dinner. We know that not all premade soups are created equal, so we set out to find which canned, cartoned and otherwise ready-to-serve soups at the store are actually worth buying. These are some of our favorites.

Costco, Williams Sonoma & More Places to Order Your Thanksgiving Turkey Online https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/articles/2877692/order-turkey-online/ https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/articles/2877692/order-turkey-online/#respond Wed, 01 Nov 2023 18:52:01 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2877692 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

We’ve all been there. Thanksgiving is approaching, and it’s time to head to the store to get a turkey. Only, when you get there, it feels like you’ve been dropped into the 7th circle of hell, which is now somehow located in the grocery store’s meat section. The turkeys are either 30 pounds of frozen bulk you won’t even be able to fit in the freezer, or watery, bland, and not worthy of the celebration you imagined in your head. This year, why not skip the chaos at the store and order a Thanksgiving turkey online? Not only will you be able to find quality turkeys that are raised humanely, but you’ll also learn that the turkey doesn’t have to be a disappointment — with these birds, it’ll be worthy of its star status.

Porter Road

Thanksgiving turkey from Porter Road

These pasture-raised turkeys from Porter Road come from family-owned farm Jolly Barnyard. Each turkey is 13-15.5 pounds, and comes with the neck and giblets for all of your gravy-making needs.

Omaha Steaks

Thanksgiving turkey from Omaha steaks

This turkey from Omaha Steaks is seasoned with a brown sugar and honey baste, and comes ready to roast with a cooking bag, pop-up timer, and instuctions. Choose between a turkey that serves eight, and a larger bird for 16 guests.

Costco

Thanksgiving turkey from Costco

You can pre-order a whole Thanksgiving meal from Costco, but you’ll need to get your order in by November 5th. Each Thanksgiving Dinner Kit serves 8, and includes a 5-pound turkey breast from an Amish farm that comes pre-brined and ready to roast, along with stuffing, mashed potatoes, gracy, macaroni and cheese, two pies, and more.

Hello Fresh

Thanksgiving turkey from Hello Fresh

Hello Fresh is making Thanksgiving just as easy as they make weeknight cooking thanks to their Thanksgiving Turkey Box. It serves 8-10 people, and includes all of the ingredients and instructions you’ll need to make a garlic herb butter roast turkey, five side dishes, and dessert.

Williams Sonoma

Thanksgiving turkey from Williams Sonoma

These autumn fruit and spice-brined turkeys from Williams Sonoma are raised in Northern California, and come ready to roast. There are six sizes available, and the 10-12 pound turkeys start at $159.95.

Pat LaFrieda

Thanksgiving turkey from Pat La Frieda

Pat LaFrieda is pricey, but the quality of meats coming from this purveyor, which supplies meat to many top restaurants, is worth it. You can choose from three sizes of all natural turkey, starting at $201.

Harry & David

Thanksgiving turkey from Harry & David

Craving something a little different this year? Go for a pre-cooked smoked turkey from Harry & David. These turkeys are marinated, slow-roasted, then smoked over hickory wood. It’s an entree your family won’t forget, and you just have to heat it up to serve.

Commander’s Palace Smoked Herb Butter-Injected Turkey

Thanksgiving turkey from Commander's Palace

Here’s another pre-cooked turkey that will make Thanksgiving feel extra special this year. It comes from famous New Orleans restaurant Commander’s Palace. This thick-cut light and dark meat turkey has been injected with herb butter, then smoked until juicy and tender. Each order serves four.

Uncle Ray’s Fried Turkeys

Thanksgiving turkey from Uncle Ray's

Deep-frying a turkey yourself can be downright scary. So why not let Uncle Ray do it for you? Choose between a mild or spicy Cajun spiced-rubbed bird that’s got crispy skin, juicy meat, and a whole lotta flavor.

Charm City Kosher Whole Turkey

Thanksgiving turkey from Charm City Kosher

If you’re looking for a kosher turkey for Thanksgiving, Charm City Kosher has you covered. Their free-range whole turkeys are raised in the Susquehanna River Valley in Pennsylvania, and weigh in at about 14-16 pounds.

This Oprah’s Favorite Things pick features large, organic luxury cookies in flavors like Chocolate Chunk with Walnuts, Oatmeal Cran-Raisin, and The Georgia Pecan Turtle — you’ll get two of each flavor. The cookies are made with ingredients like Madagascar vanilla bean, pure cocoa butter, Georgia caramel, and black cocoa. It’s a splurge, sure, but one you deserve.

Angela Logan’s Mortgage Apple Cakes

This cake isn’t just delicious, it also has an amazing story. Baker Angela Logan needed to save her home from foreclosure, so she made a goal to sell 100 cakes in 10 days. The cake? Mortgage Apple Cake, which is loaded with fresh chopped apples and spices, then topped with a luscious cream cheese frosting. Needless to say, Logan ended up selling 900 of the delicious cakes and became a huge success, and now you can order one for your own family this holiday season.

Boarderie Baked Brie Charcuterie Board

There’s something so indulgent about baked brie, especially when it’s wrapped in flaky puff pastry. But this set from Boarderie takes baked brie en croute to the next level, pairing the creamy cheese with gourmet ingredients in four different flavors: chocolate, espresso, and raspberry; rosemary, sun-dried tomato, and olive; blueberry, vanilla, and ginger; and truffle, fig, and orange. The set comes with an acacia wood charcuterie board for serving, and the cheeses, which come frozen, just need to be baked for 20 minutes before serving.

Point Reyes Celebration Collection Cheese Gift Basket

If you’ve never tried Point Reyes’ cheese, you’re in for a treat. This cheese gift box, which is like an insta-party, includes the award-winning cheeses Toma, Toma Rashi, Toma Provence, Toma Truffle, Blue Bay, and Quinta. It also comes with Effie’s Homemade Pecan Biscuits and Janet’s Finest Compotes Raspberry Jalapeno spread, which pairs beautifully with all of the cheeses. Just unwrap and serve!

Martha Stewart Just Revealed One of Her 'Best Kept Secrets' for Holiday Hosting & It's Brilliantly Simple https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/articles/2876117/martha-stewart-pure-leaf-diy-interview/ https://www.sheknows.com/food-and-recipes/articles/2876117/martha-stewart-pure-leaf-diy-interview/#respond Thu, 26 Oct 2023 13:45:00 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2876117 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

Fall is the time for all things Do-It-Yourself. You have the initial autumn goodness of the leaves changing and the seasonal drinks, and then comes embracing all things Halloween and Thanksgiving. Fall is the time for cozy drinks, especially when you can bundle up and have a nice cup of tea, or host a holiday party where everyone can enjoy a hearty drink. Whether you want to be the best host this holiday season or treat yourself, Martha Stewart has you covered.

Or rather, Stewart and Pure Leaf has you covered, with a seriously cool giveaway that’s perfect for all tea lovers, and anyone who doesn’t mind a handy shortcut or two to their DIY projects.

“Why do it yourself when Pure Leaf does it just as well, if not better?” Stewart said about the brand. “We all know I cherish the act of DIYing, but I’ve come to a place where I’m more discerning with where I exert my time and energy….Pure Leaf has always been my best-kept secret when it comes to hosting hacks.”

Starting on Oct 26, shoppers can enter a giveaway from Pure Leaf that lets them get a Pure Leaf x Martha Stewart ‘Don’t Do It Yourself’ Kit.

We got to talk to Stewart about her Pure Leaf collaboration, her newest project in the works, and the simple motto she has for people who think their age defines what they can and can’t do.

When you sit down with Stewart, you know you’re in the presence of someone who knows exactly who they are and isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. She knows she’s the Queen of DIY, and she knows that the world is full of wonderous things to try, whether it be creating a maze (yes, that’s actually happening) or making your own tea in a simple way that Pure Leaf shows.

In Stewart’s own words, the kit “is introductory to a delicious product,” and so much comes with it. “It’s a very high-quality, convenient drink. Put a piece of mint and maybe some lemon and have a nice iced tea!” (Always has hosting on the brain!)

Now, if you’re wondering what’s in the Stewart-approved kit, she broke it all down, and boy, it sounds like a tea lover’s dream! “There’s an ice cube, a square ice cube tray, so you can make your own square ice cubes with a little design of a pure leaf in it,” she said. “[There’s also] a bottle full of dried fruits as a garnish for your ice tea, a bottle of the pure leaf, a pitcher, so you can just pour it right over ice in the pitcher and enjoy!”

(And if you’re wondering which one of Pure Leaf’s drinks is her favorite, it’s the unsweetened iced tea since she doesn’t “like sugary drinks, this is healthy and cooling!”)

Now, this may be all about “Don’t-DIYing,” but Stewart doesn’t abide by that mindset. “I think people should always do things. I think it’s important, but certain things can be left to others if it’s done better or done in a more tasty manner,” she said.

But truly, being a DIY guru was always in Stewart’s genes.

“I’ve always been making things. I’m from a family of people who have always done things with their hands and made things. Mom was a great seamstress and sower. My father was a great gardener and builder. As kids, we were encouraged to do as much as we could possibly do ourselves,” she said.

She also detailed how each of her siblings DIYed in their own, truly unique ways. One brother was a fisherman who “tied all his own flies, and made his own fishing rods.” Another brother was a wood carver, while another brother makes stained glass, and another was “a builder of all kinds of houses and buildings.”

As for her sisters, one “is an incredible weaver,” while another was “really great cook and homemaker, and a fabulous sewer.”

And Stewart? We know she can cook, bake, write, and craft anything she wants. And during our conversation, she not only discussed her love of all things plants, but the major (potentially record-breaking) venture she’s working on.

“Planting, gardening, [and] nurturing the outdoors” is what she loves right now, and in her free time, she works in her six greenhouses. “I have one greenhouse just for vegetables, and so I can eat completely from my greenhouse all winter long. I have one greenhouse that’s just citrus, so I grow all my own oranges and lemons and limes in New York State. So it’s it’s quite an enterprise.”

She added, “That’s the kind of stuff I like to do.”

Not only does she have six greenhouses, but she’s going above and beyond and making a maze.

“I am making a three-acre maze planted with every row is a different kind of plant or shrub or tree, and it’s basically a maze for me and my horses to exercise in,” she gushed. “I was reading in the Farmer’s Almanac that it might be the biggest maze in the continental United States!” (She also divulged she has around 18 more months on it before it’s complete, and we seriously can’t wait to see what this IRL Labyrinth moment is like!)

And for those wondering, “Why a maze?!” She simply said, “I’m just curious about it. I love how they look and I love walking in mazes.” (Can you say “iconic?!”)

And if you’re wondering how Stewart truly is, this interaction sums it up perfectly. When asked, “What about people who think their age limits what they can do?” She simply smiled, and said, “Think again.”

Is there anything better than donning a team jersey and a flannel shirt, ready to settle into a day of sitting on the couch, snacking on delicious cheesy foods? Sure, the game is on too, but whether you’re there for the athletic action like these celebrity moms, or there for the snacks, it’s always a good idea to have a spread of nibbles available to yourself and your guests. After all, you don’t want anyone to get so caught up in the game that they forget to eat, and with snacks as delicious as these ones from Costco, even overtime won’t be enough to keep people from loading up their plates. Not a Costco member yet? Sign up here, so you can start stocking your freezer with these game day favorites ASAP.

Eastern Standard Provisions Soft Pretzels

If you can’t make it to the stadium in person, these frozen soft pretzels from Eastern Standard Provisions are the next best thing (and honestly, they might be even better than what you get at the ballpark).

La Paloma Dulce De Leche Churro Bites

We’ve been to way too many football watching parties that forget about dessert. Sure, cheese is exciting, but what about dulce de leche? These churro bites will add that much-needed sweet treat to your snack spread.

Realgood Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Jalapeños

There are some frozen jalapeño poppers we’ve bought before, coated in breading, that tasted so bland we couldn’t even tell where the peppers were. But these Realgood bacon-wrapped cheese-stuffed jalapeños taste just as good as they look.

Boursin Stuffed Brioche

Sure, these Maison Defroidmont Mini French Brioches filled with Boursin sound fancy — maybe even too fancy for a football party. But what if you just call ’em cheesy rolls? No one can argue with the delicious combo of carbs and dairy, no matter what they’re called.

Nashville Hot Inspired Chicken Firecrackers

Not only are these chicken firecrackers a total steal (30 pieces for $9.97!), they also seem like they were created in a lab somewhere to be the ultimate game day snack. Serve these spicy, crunchy chicken snacks with plenty of ranch for dipping.

Hebrew National Pigs in a Blanket

It just wouldn’t be a party without some pigs in a blanket, and even though making them yourself is pretty easy, nothing beats the ease of throwing some of these frozen Hebrew National Beef Franks in a Puff Pastry Blanket (ooh, more fancy!) into the air fryer so you don’t have to miss too much of the game.

Junior’s Mini Cheesecakes

Here’s another sweet treat you don’t want to miss out on: Junior’s Mini Cheesecakes, which include three flavors per box. It’s the perfect sweet chaser to a tray of hot wings.

Milton’s Cauliflower Crust Pizza

Don’t forget about your gluten-free friends! Keep a cauliflower crust pizza in the freezer, and you’ll be able to serve up tasty snacks to anyone who stops by to watch the big game.
