In the latest season of Peacock’s true crime drama, Dr. Death, Moore is playing Benita Alexander, an investigative reporter who is seduced by Italian thoracic surgeon Paolo Macchiarini. The suspenseful, twisting drama — which is based on true events — sees Moore in one of her darkest plots yet.

The show is streaming on Peacock now but, ahead of its release, Moore chatted with us alongside Edgar Ramirez who plays the deceitful and manipulative Dr. Macchiarini.

“It is such a departure,” Moore said of her decision to take on the role of an NBC journalist who was conned into a relationship with the disgraced doctor who knowingly performed experimental transplant surgeries on patients without sufficient scientific evidence resulting in many deaths.

“It was a very intentional move in a different direction to do something that feels totally so different than anything I’ve really ever dipped my toe in before,” Moore continued. “I’m fascinated that people like Paolo exists in the world, and that people like Benita, this very capable, smart, accomplished woman could find herself, you know, in a position vulnerable enough to fall victim and be susceptible to this kind of degree of manipulation.”

And yet, as different as Benita Alexander is from Moore’s This Is Us character Rebecca Pearson, the actress plays both character with depth and heart. The show’s executive producer and writer, Ashley Michel Hoban, told us she was astounded by how Moore tackled the character.

“It’s just such a privilege to watch her bring this character to life in a really nuanced way,” Michel Hoban says. “It’s pivotal because we we meet Paolo through Benita’s point of view. We’re skeptical the same way she is skeptical and, when he wins her over, that’s an important point for the audience to be won over. So [Moore] really delivered with the kind of warmth, intelligence, savviness and trustworthiness that she brings to screen.”

Opposite her, Ramirez expertly plays the charismatic and convincing Macchiarini who deceives colleagues, patients and the medical community into participating his dangerous surgeries. Moore and Ramirez are joined on-screen by Luke Kirby, Ashley Madekwe and Gustaf Hammarsten, Macchiarini’s colleagues who are also swept along in his lies.

The at times difficult to watch medical malpractice narrative is interjected by Macchiarini and Alexander’s love story that plays a key role in the Italian surgeon’s ability to keep his deceptions hidden. Moore says, “Getting to see the duality of, like, he was that person professionally and he was that person personally as well, it’s sort of like true pathological narcissism at play.”

“What makes the the second season so unique and interesting,” Ramirez adds, “is precisely the love story that lives at the core, at the very center of the story.”

Ramirez describes the season as “a deeper exploration of greater subjects of humanity: trust, betrayal, fantasy, the need to believe and the need to retell your story.” The show weaves between all these elements but keeps both the viewer and the characters as captives in Macchiarini’s grip.

“That’s what great manipulators do. They’re very sensitive in identifying your vulnerabilities and just get through those cracks to wherever they need to go,” Ramirez says. Yet, in spite of his iron grip, the fate Macchiarini ends up laying in the capable hands of Moore’s character and his colleagues, and audiences can expect to be surprised by how that fate is reached.

Dr. Death is streaming now on Peacock.

23 Movies That Show Women Having Relationships With Younger Men https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2494104/older-women-younger-men-relationship-movies/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2494104/older-women-younger-men-relationship-movies/#respond Mon, 18 Dec 2023 20:45:52 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2494104 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

For decades, there’s been a certain relationship trope in movies that we haven’t exactly been a fan of, and that’s men being romantically involved with younger women. Now, we’re not saying that all these films are bad movies — honestly, we’ll watch Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall any day. But because these types of romances have been so normalized, we really don’t often see enough stories about the opposite: women who have relationships with younger men. And when we do, we talk about them like they’re anomalies or somehow taboo — think The Graduate or Daniel Craig-led The Mother, in which older women pursue their daughter’s romantic interests.

Now that’s not to say that we want all relationship with major age gaps to be normalized and some films do a great job of calling out dangerous age gaps between men and women. There is most definitely a line and just like with some romances between older men and younger women, plot lines with much younger men dating an older woman can be uncomfortable viewing. However, some movies manage to pull off displaying older women as desirable, sexual beings without glorifying power imbalances or inappropriate age gaps.

In recent years, we’ve seen a shift in some depictions of women who pursue, date, or have relationships with younger men, even if it’s hardly a cinematic mainstay. New additions to the genre like Something’s Gotta Give show that these dynamics don’t have to be any more complicated than when older men date younger women — which, as we’ve pointed out, happens so often in film that we’d struggle to round it down to a top 500.

From hidden gems like The Good Girl, starring 21-year-old Jake Gyllenhaal and 32-year-old celebrity crush Jennifer Aniston to the decidedly darker The Reader, starring Kate Winslet in her Oscar-winning performance, these movies all took a stab at showing the real-world Olivia Wilde-Harry Styles dynamic on-screen, for better or for worse. Read on to see which of your favorite actors have coupled up with slightly-to-much older ladies for a movie romance.

31 Great Shows Netflix Canceled in 2 Seasons or Less https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2697266/canceled-netflix-shows/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2697266/canceled-netflix-shows/#respond Mon, 18 Dec 2023 19:40:47 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2697266 Remember a decade ago when Netflix was the streaming app to watch everything on (and even at one point the only one to get Friends?!) Well, times have certainly changed, because instead of being one of the favorite streaming services, it’s gotten a bit of a reputation over the years. For what, you may ask? Chances are you already know what we mean; Netflix is now known for canceling their original series in two seasons or less.

First, it was Sense8, then it was the Baby-Sitters Club, and now the two newest victims are Inside Job and 1899. And if you’ve been on Twitter for the past 24 hours, then you know how fans are losing their minds over the sudden cancellation of fan-favorite animated series Inside Job.

When Netflix cancels a show, fans are often left disgruntled and without closure (99.9 percent of the time, there’s an insane cliffhanger we’ll never get the answers to!) We’re in 2023 now, and it’s still looking bleak for Netflix shows.

According to What’s on Netflix, Netflix bases its decisions on renewals and cancellations on how many people watch the show, if/how quickly they finish whatever is released, and budget constraints. However, fans have been recently calling that methodology out, due to the fact that many beloved shows get axed for virtually no reason.

If you’re as angry as Twitter is right now, then let’s take a look back at the good shows Netflix decided to cancel in two seasons or less.

23 Actresses Who Were Way Too Young to Be Cast in These Mom Roles https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2538896/actresses-who-play-moms-to-same-age-actors/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2538896/actresses-who-play-moms-to-same-age-actors/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2023 14:28:05 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2538896 Hollywood casting is truly a hit-or-miss situation. Sometimes the casting is so perfect that you couldn’t picture a better ensemble. Then, other times, you’re questioning how no one said anything to stop it from happening. Way more often than it should, Hollywood keeps casting women who are way too young to play adult celebrities’ moms.

We don’t know why, but Hollywood seems to have a mental block when properly casting mothers. At first glance, many seem fine — until you see the actor’s ages. You’d think there would be a sizable difference between the actors, but some are as little as 10 months. From 10 months to 12 years older, we don’t understand why Hollywood has a problem casting moms properly.

And on top of that, sometimes the actresses who play the moms are younger than their on-screen children. We have questions (and you probably do too).

With the latest news of Emmy Rossum being cast as Tom Holland’s mother, despite only being 10 years older, everyone wants to know: “Why does Hollywood not know how to cast moms?” From the X-Files to Alexander, there’s a lot more miscasting than you think.

Check out these actresses who were way too young to be cast in these mother roles below.

We Can’t Decide Whether These 21 Movies Are Christmas Movies or Not https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2912993/christmas-movies-that-arent-christmas-movies/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2912993/christmas-movies-that-arent-christmas-movies/#respond Wed, 13 Dec 2023 21:55:08 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2912993 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

We love bundling up under a bunch of blankets, with a cup of cocoa in hand, and binging every Christmas movie we can find. Now, we love the classics like It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, and Love Actually, but sometimes, we wanna shake things up.

Eventually, we run out of Christmas movies (and sometimes, we just want to try something new, but still in the same vein as the wintertime). We want those wintertime movies, packed with all the fixings of a Christmas film: a lesson about togetherness or being grateful, love, and something to make us cry.

Now, quite a few films have been debated as Christmas films over the years (yes, we’re talking about you, Die Hard). And years after the films have been released, some put these films in their Christmas cycle.

Will you, though?

From action-packed films like The Nice Guys and The Long Kiss Goodnight to romance films placed during winter like Serendipity and Edward Scissorhands, there’s something for everyone.

Below, check out which movies we’re debating on whether or not they should be considered Christmas movies.

17 Great Shows Hulu Canceled in 3 Seasons or Less https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2837073/canceled-hulu-shows/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2837073/canceled-hulu-shows/#respond Tue, 12 Dec 2023 20:44:38 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2837073 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

We’re pretty sure that if there were a 10th circle of Hell, it would just be someone telling you your favorite shows got canceled over and over again. While Netflix is known for canceling shows before they’ve even taken off, and breaking our hearts every single time, it kind of hits differently when a streaming platform like Hulu cancels your favorite show.

When Hulu cancels a show, it’s a true moment of betrayal. They’re one of the best platforms, letting shows go on until their natural ending. But sometimes, they axe a show right in the middle of it, and 2023 has been a big year for that.

While we still mourn the unexpected ending of Dollface and PEN15, Hulu just canceled two more shows within the past week. In late Aug 2023, news broke that they canceled the Emmy-winning show The Great after its third season, and days later, announced they canceled How I Met Your Father before fans could find out who the father was.

It’s never fun when a show gets canceled, and in honor of The Great and HIMYF ending unexpectedly, we’re taking a walk down memory lane.

Get your Hulu accounts ready as you dive back into the great shows Hulu canceled in three seasons or less. See our picks below:

These Women Over 40 All Secured Golden Globe Nominations & Could Win Big at This Year’s Awards https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2912700/women-over-40-nominated-golden-globes-2024/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2912700/women-over-40-nominated-golden-globes-2024/#respond Mon, 11 Dec 2023 16:52:33 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2912700 It has been a good year for women in film thanks in large part to the success of Barbiea female-directed and female-centered production that is the top-grossing movie of the year. And with the Golden Globes nominations officially announced, and awards season just around the corner, it is time for the women behind Barbie and many other successful productions to get the praise they deserve.

It’s no secret that the intersection of sexism and ageism in Hollywood often means that women over a certain age lose out on roles or are forced to play the same sidelined characters over and over again. However, times are changing and we’re seeing more and more female actresses have lucrative and critically-acclaimed careers well into their 60s, 70s and beyond.

This year’s Golden Globes nominations honored many women over the age of 40 — 23 women to be exact! Spearheading the nominations is Greta Gerwig whose movie, Barbie, is nominated nine times. However, she is just one of many women getting honored at the Golden Globes 2024.

The Golden Globes 2024 will take place on Sunday, January 7 — which is when we’ll find out who will take home the coveted awards in the show’s wide-spanning categories. But for now, we’re celebrating the nominees — in particular nominees who are defying Hollywood stereotypes and pushing back against ageism and sexism in the film industry.

Keeping reading to see all of the 23 women over the age of 40 who are nominated for Golden Globes in 2024.

Fans Are Rejoicing Over the News That Angelina Jolie Is Reprising One of Her Most Iconic Roles https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2912650/angelina-jolie-reprising-maleficent-roles/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2912650/angelina-jolie-reprising-maleficent-roles/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2023 21:30:00 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2912650 If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SheKnows may receive an affiliate commission.

This is not a drill, people: it seems we’re getting a third Maleficent movie, and Angelina Jolie herself is set to reprise her iconic role.

Despite Jolie insinuating she wants to leave Hollywood ASAP (or really when her legal battles with ex-husband Brad Pitt come to an end), she’s tapped in for quite a few projects in the next couple of years, and to be frank, the project people are most excited for is the both heartwarming and gut-wrenching Disney villain movie franchise.

During her recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, it was confirmed she’d be returning as the lead Maleficent for the third movie (a detail which many have missed until the popular X account PopTingz reposted it).

Not much is known about the third installment, except that Jolie will star again and that writer Linda Woolverton will also be returning. Many are hoping Elle Fanning will return to reprise her role as Sleeping Beauty, but it hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Also, per Hollywood Life, it’s believed filming could begin sometime in 2024.

For those who don’t know, Maleficent is a dark fantasy film that retails the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty, where Maleficent ends up being the hero of the story. It begins the same, where Maleficent curses an infant princess, but how she got there was told differently than before, and how Princess Aurora was saved also took a dramatic change.

The second movie, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil follows Aurora and Maleficent as they are at a crossroads, where Aurora is set to Mary and enter a kingdom that could potentially hurt them.

Even though the movie has been out since 2019, spoilers are ahead!

It’s unclear what the third installment will be about, but the second film left off with Maleficent saying she’ll return for Aurora and her now husband Phillip’s christening for their first child.

Until Jolie bids farewell to Hollywood, we will enjoy every single role she brings to the big screen, and we’re already impatiently awaiting all the details we can find about Maleficent 3!
