The Crown Didn’t Shy Away From Prince William’s Obsession With Supermodels & Cindy Crawford Loves It

One of Prince William‘s most awkward teenage moments, captured in Episode 5 of the final season of The Crown, hints to a real-life situation that some fans might remember. It was a stage of William’s life that he would probably rather forget, but Cindy Crawford is thrilled that her influence on the young royal was mentioned in the series.

She shared a clip from the show on Instagram, which has Prince Philip, played by Jonathan Pryce, visiting his grandson, played by Ed McVey, in his dorm room. He approached a bulletin board with the three iconic ’90s supermodels and asked, “Do they have names?”

William answered, “Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, and Naomi Campbell.”

“In my day, they were Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, and Lana Turner,” Philip chimed in.

This small, but meaningful moment delighted Crawford, who reminded her fans of another delicious anecdote from almost 30 years ago. She wrote in the caption, “A little cameo on @thecrownnetflix 👀 I still vividly remember visiting Kensington Palace to meet Diana and a teenage William (who had just discovered the “Super Models”) ♥️.”

Prince William recalled the real-life moment when he was in his early teens and obsessed with the supermodels. It was Princess Diana who arranged a meeting of a lifetime with Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, and Naomi Campbell waiting at the top of the stairs for him one day when he returned home from school.

“I went bright red and didn’t know quite what to say. And sort of fumbled and I think pretty much fell down the stairs on the way up,” William recalled in the ITV documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, via the Independent. “That was a very funny memory that’s lived with me forever.”

It’s a day he and Crawford have never forgotten, and it shows just how much Diana loved her sons. The Crown made sure that a hint of that sweet memory made a cameo in their interpretation of the royal family‘s life.
