King Charles III finally had some time to cool off and think about how he wanted to react to the “royal racist” revelations in Omid Scobie’s book, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival. The monarch’s reported first instinct was to take legal action, but it seems like he is having second thoughts about that approach.

Royal sources told The Daily Beast that Charles is taking a page from Queen Elizabeth II’s playbook of “Never complain, never explain.” The insiders claim that he’s going to “quietly forget” that he threatened legal action and let headlines about Charles and Kate Middleton‘s alleged “concerns’ about Prince Archie’s skin color die down. “The king has bigger fish to fry,” a source said. “It’s only a book. It’s a classic case of ‘Don’t explain or complain’ and let it blow over. They will just quietly forget it now. I don’t think there are going to be any lawsuits being filed.”

The royal pal also defended the king noting, “I think anyone who knows Charles knows he is not a racist.” An early draft of the book mentioned both Charles and Kate’s names, but later edits removed the reported offenders in the U.S. and U.K. editions. The only reason the alleged offenders were identified was due to the Dutch publication, which received an early draft for translation. Scobie even said the names were redacted by his publishers’ lawyers because they feared legal action from the palace.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who first raised the issue publicly in their 2021 sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey, have also not commented on the revelation. The Sussexes remarked in the past that they believe it is an “unconscious bias” issue, but the story took on a life of its own. With Harry and Meghan trying to make peace with Charles, it’s unlikely royal fans will hear anything else from either side — but Scobie’s book still leaves an unforgettable stain on the palace.
