We Asked Astrologers to Explain Why These Celeb Couples Work

If you’ve ever tried to surreptitiously find out what time someone was born on a first date (that one’s for the true astrology fans), you’ve come to the right place.

In astrology, it’s often just as much fun to talk about birth chart compatibility as it is to learn new things about your own chart. Why? Because your birth chart can tell you so much about yourself and your romantic relationship with others. And whether you are in the beginning crush stages or have gotten past a couple of dates, you can really get into the weeds on how much of an astrological match you might actually be.

Beyond just wondering how to find love if you’re single (which is a whole other topic), a big aspect of love readings has to do with zodiac compatibility. For example, can an air sign with intimacy issues — we’re talking to you Aquarius — make it with a lovesick Pisces? Can two people with the exact same sign keep things interesting in a relationship? What signs really create magic as they navigate sex, parenting, and day-to-day life as a couple? It’s the hottest form of gossip for the astrology-obsessed (me, specifically).

Regardless of what’s in your birth chart, relationships take work to succeed — but you’ll notice that some star signs don’t often end up on the path to perfect chemistry, and conversely, sometimes the signs that you never expect to be together actually create a harmonious relationship. Part of that may be that other elements of your birth chart besides your sun sign, or main zodiac sign, may interact with other elements of your partner’s birth chart. So your Mars sign — a.k.a. the sign behind both your passion and your anger — could either be a suitable match or clash with someone else’s Venus sign, which represents how they give and receive love. To get a sense of astrological compatibility in action, we called on Astrologists Allie Schultz and Rebecca Gordon to examine the IRL romantic pairings between some of our favorite celebrity couples with sun sign placements across the board. “Leo and Piscean signs are known to have tremendous hearts of gold, being extremely loving as well as generous,” Schultz says. “I have a feeling Joe and Sophie are in a whirlwind romance in which the honeymoon phase is long lasting compared to other relationships.”
Beyoncé (Virgo) + Jay Z (Sagittarius)

“These two have a healthy dose of tension as Beyonce is earthy Virgo – holding it down and Jay Z is fiery Sagittarius lighting it up,” Gordon says. “This earth-fire power couple possesses one of the most electrical passion signatures in the zodiac as Jay Z’s Venus aligns with Beyonce’s Uranus in Scorpio. Sparks fly – both creatively and in the sheets.”
Kelly Ripa (Libra) + Mark Consuelos (Aries)

“This is a literal case of when opposites attract! Being polar opposite signs within the zodiac wheel, Kelly and Mark bring out the best in one another,” Schultz says. “Though being opposites can get tricky in seeing the other’s point of view, they still share common ground when it comes to relating to others, being an Aries and a Libra.”

“What’s interesting with Will and Jada is this would typically be a match that’s hard to pinpoint the similarities they share,” Schultz says. “Will, the Libra, probably knows how to add more carefree fun to the mix; while Jada, the Virgo brings a more serious tone to matters when it’s needed the most.”
