Tina Fey Reveals the Butt Crack Joke About Women in Their 40s That Sold Her on Making Girls5eva

For a series that’s one part girl-group-musical and three parts grown-lady-love, we can’t recommend better than Meredith Scardino’s new TV show Girls5evaexecutive produced by Tina Fey, starring Sara Bareilles, Busy Philipps, Paula Pell, and Hamilton‘s Renée Elise Goldsberry, and streaming for free on Peacock right now. The four women star as ’90s girl group Girls5eva who step back into the spotlight decades later when their hit song is sampled by a new artist, and in a new SheKnows interview with the stars and creators of the show, Fey revealed the joke Scardino told her about women’s butt cracks in their 40s that sealed the deal on her making this show.

SheKnows’ VP of Video Reshma Gopaldas asked Scardino and Fey exactly how the series came about, and while the former remembers her passion for writing about the experiences she was having as a woman in her 40s, the latter remembers one line in particular that sold her on the project.

“I just remember one of the first jokes that Meredith pitched when she was talking about writing about being in your 40s she kept saying, ‘you know how, when you turn 40, your butt crack starts to get shorter?'” Fey shared.

“When you go to the gym, eventually you see someone over 70 or something and the butt crack seems to get — it just goes down to about an inch,” Scardino interjects. “And I’m just like, I don’t know what’s happening!”

“That’s a really specific observation that I had not heard anyone make before,” said Fey.

Well, file that under things that will haunt us for the rest of the day. But Fey and Scardino have a point — as do Goldsberry, Philipps, and Pell as they answer our “Would You Rather” questions and sing each other’s character’s theme songs while confirming that there’s no one we’d rather spend a day with than this group of ladies. Find out what else they have to say about the ladies of Girls5eva above.
