Omid Scobie’s royal biography, Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival, caused an explosion of headlines when it was released in late November. The author’s take on what is happening behind palace walls is a must-read for royal fans on both sides of the fence, but there was one hot topic he steered clear of, Prince William‘s alleged affair with Rose Hanbury.

Scobie explained to The Zoomer Book Club why he refused to “give oxygen” to the unverified story along with his final word on the rumors. It came down to his own experiences as a “victim to online gossip” which he called “not nice.” He noted, “There are times when I discuss the rumors themselves – the fallout with Rose Hanbury, allegedly, for example – but I don’t spend a second talking about whether it’s true or not, because in my mind, unless you can come to me with evidence, it’s B.S.” Scobie wants people to understand and that “if there’s evidence,” then the rumored affair story would have made his final edit.

It might be shocking to some people to hear that he’s taking Prince William’s side on this story, given the fact that he’s been labeled by the British tabloids as “Meg’s pal” and a “Sussex mouthpiece.” But he truthfully believes that “everything about [the alleged affair] appears to be nonsense.” Scobie added, “I discuss it in the book but in the context of how it was presented to the public through a national tabloid. I wanted to analyze how those rumors were dealt with behind the scenes, without giving any credence to something that probably isn’t true. In this world, you need to be able to show and tell.”

‘Endgame’ by Omid Scobie

The rumored entanglement between Prince William and Rose Hanbury first surfaced in 2019 after a now-deleted article in The Sun reported on Kate Middleton’s falling out with her “rural rival,” via Cosmopolitan. She reportedly asked her husband to have Hanbury “phased out” of their wealthy country circle of friends near their Anmer Hall estate. The story then took on a life of its own after writer Giles Coren wrote in a now-deleted tweet, “Yes. It is an affair. I haven’t read the piece, but I know about the affair. Everyone knows about the affair, darling.”

William and Kate have spent almost four years silently enduring the gossip while never confirming or denying any of the stories. It’s not a PR approach that everyone would take because the gossip often fuel takes on a life of its own. But for Scobie, he’s sticking with his opinion that the alleged affair between William and Hanbury never happened. He did his research, and the facts just aren’t there.
